Mission San Javier
San Javier is a beautiful oasis on the Santo Domingo creek some 38 kilometers (24 miles)
SE of Loreto. There are fruit orchards and ancient olive trees thriving on an irrigation
system implemented by the founders of the San Javier Mission over three-hundred years ago.
The mission was founded at nearby Rancho Viejo by Padre Francisco Maria Pícolo in
1699 and relocated to its current site in 1701 by Padre Juan de Ugarte. It is second only
to Loreto (1693) as the oldest mission in the Californias.
